7 Tips for a Germ-Free Office

By Nicole Tinkham

When compiling your office supply list, you may be leaving out some crucial items. Cleaning and sanitation products are essential for a healthy work environment. Why are these items so important? About 70% of employees come to work sick, and without a proper way to eliminate the germs you could be in danger of coming down with something.  Just think, keyboards have higher levels of bacteria than toilet seats! Don’t freak – just follow these tips to eliminate disgusting germs!

Stock up on hand sanitizer

When it comes to hand sanitizer, the options are endless. You’ve got multiple size pump bottles, dispensers, foaming, moisturizing, and wipes. Hand sanitizers are able to kill 99.9% of common germs that may cause illness within 15 seconds. Now that’s pretty powerful! Here’s a list of sanitizers to look out for:

  • On the go bottles: These are ideal for sanitizing on the go with a carrier that attaches to key rings.
  • Pal: This little guy is perfect for holding your 8 oz. hand sanitizer pump on your desk.
  • Hygiene station: These stations come in both desktop and standing forms. They hold a bottle of hand sanitizer and a box of facial tissues for ultimate convenience.
  • Alcohol-free: Hand sanitizer tends to make hands dried out and rough. This is caused by the alcohol found in most sanitizers. Alcohol-free sanitizer eliminates this problem and is much easier on the hands, still killing germs.
  • Scented: Tired of the typical hand sanitizer scent? Try Ocean Mist or Spring Bloom!

Sanitize your desk

Sanitizing your desk is just as important as your hands. Wipe down your desk with disinfectant wipes once a day. This not only prevents you from getting sick but also helps you stay organized (you have to clear your desk in order to wipe it down). There are many mild scents to choose from when purchasing Lysol or Clorox wipes to mask the smell of chemicals. Try lavender, lemon, ocean, and fresh scents! Wall mount dispensers are also available.

TIP: When wiping down your desk, make sure to get the keyboard, phone, and mouse! These are the things you touch most on a daily basis so it’s important to make sure they’re germ-free!

Clean your keyboard

Wiping down your keyboard with a disinfectant wipe is a great idea but getting the spaces between keys is much more of a hassle. However, there are a few different ways to get those hard to reach areas.

  • Compressed air: Blasts away particles that are normally hard to reach.
  • KeyKleen: These are pre-moistened swabs that allow you to reach between keys.

TIP: You can also dip a cotton swab in a solution to get those difficult areas!

Wash your hands!

It may seem like a no brainer but washing your hands is the best way to prevent the spread of germs. 96% of people say they regularly wash their hands but the number of people that actually do is lower. Wash your hands throughout the day and make sure to use lots of soap and hot water! When adding soap to your Keeton’s order, there are several options available for both dispensers and pump bottles.

And don’t forget the paper towels! There are numerous options when it comes to paper towels. You’ll find folded paper towels (C-Fold, Multifold, and Singlefold) as well as rolls, both large (for dispensers) and small (no dispenser needed). Look forward to an exciting blog post with more information on the various types of paper towels!

Avoid eating at your desk

This causes bacteria to grow where you spend most of your time. Instead, eat in the break room – and make sure it’s as clean as possible. The break room sink carries more germs than a toilet seat! That being said, let’s talk about some cleaning supplies for the break room!

Don’t forget to wash coffee mugs, utensils, and other dishes thoroughly with soap and hot water!

Clean water bottles daily

Water bottles are great to have at your desk but could be harmful if not cleaned on a daily basis. Rinsing with fresh water (what most of us tend to do) does not get rid of the bacteria build-up! Use hot water and soap to scrub your water bottles EVERY DAY!

Take your vitamins

Even with the tips listed above, there are chances you will get sick occasionally. Vitamins are a great way to stay healthy. A daily dose of vitamin C tends to reduce your risk of getting sick. Emergen-C is a powder drink mix (available in 4 flavors) that contains vitamins and antioxidants. These are great to have around the office!

More than half of employees come to work sick. That’s reason enough to start being conscious of cleaning and sanitation supplies in the office. Next time you’re placing an office supply order, add some hand sanitizer or disinfectant wipes. Everything mentioned in this blog (and more) is available at Keeton’s!
