Choosing an envelope doesn’t have to be as difficult as it seems. Yes, you’re presented with many different options including size, type, flap, seam, color, material, and special features like window placement, closure type and security tinting. That may be a little overwhelming, but as long as you follow these 4 easy steps, choosing an envelope will be a breeze.

1. What size do you need? Envelopes are often associated with a size # rather than the actual dimensions. We know this can get tricky which is why we provided a sizing chart below. We recommend printing the chart and keeping it close by as a reference. The most common size business envelopes are #10, but there are other sizes as well, some of which are not listed in this blog (catalog, invitation, coin envelopes, and more). Look for a future blog featuring these other sizes. For now, let’s focus on business envelopes.

Size #                                 Dimensions

#6 ¼                                   3.5” x 6”
#6 ¾                                   3.625” x 6.5”
#8 5/8                                 3.625” x 8.625”
#7                                       3.75” x 6.75”
#7 ¾ (monarch)             3.875” x 7.5”
#9                                       3.875” x 8.875”
#9 (policy)                        4” x 9”
#10                                     4.125” x 9.5”
DL                                      4.313” x 8.625”
#11                                    4.5” x 10.375”
#12                                    4.75” x 11”
#14                                    5” x 11.5”
#16                                    6” x 12”

2. Do you need a window envelope? Envelopes are available with and without windows. Those with windows come in a variety of window placement options.

3. Do you need a particular seam type? There are three main seam types you will find in the Keeton’s catalog: Contemporary or Side Seam, Traditional Seam, and Diagonal Seam, V-Flap. These options may not mean much to you but if you’re looking for a certain style, it helps to notice the difference.

4. Do you need any special features? You may need an envelope with security tinting or one with a self-adhesive flap. These as well as the other features listed below are things to look for if you have a special type of envelope in mind.

Once you narrow it down to the four steps listed above, choosing an envelope really isn’t too complicated. Just think about the features you need when it comes to size, windows, style, and anything special like security tinting. Of course we’re always here to help. We know you may have questions about other envelopes not mentioned in this post such as catalog or invitation envelopes.
