The SECRET to success at work may surprise you

By Nicole Tinkham

Ever feel like you head to the office for a long day of work and get nothing out of it in the end? You may feel like all you do is busywork that no one actually benefits from. Months and years go by and you’re still doing the same exact thing every single day, feeling unfulfilled. Everyone has a different definition of success but we think feeling as though you have purpose and being passionate about what you do is a pretty good one. It’s not all about income. Some of the wealthiest people are miserable in their careers. When you find that success, or that passion, everything comes together. You feel proud of the effort you put in, you look forward to waking up and starting the day, you begin to plan out big goals for your future, and most importantly, you’re HAPPY in life. Most of you probably desire this “fantasy” lifestyle but don’t think it could ever become a reality for you. We’re here to tell you that it is possible and you can love going to work every day. You can be one of the most successful people at work if you do this one key thing.

First of all, what exactly is the difference between a job and a career? Many times people refer to a job as something that needs to be done in order to basically survive. You head to your job, do what you have to do (usually the minimum requirement) and return home without much thought other than that. You do this religiously every single day not because you love it but because it pays for a roof over your head and food in your belly. A career, on the other hand is something that takes up more of your life. You don’t necessarily have to be a college graduate to begin your career but you are continuously learning and growing within the business. It’s more than just making money to pay the necessities. You have real responsibilities that you may think about outside of the workplace. A career is your LIFE. But having a career over a job doesn’t make you successful.

Fact: We spend about 100,000 hours of our lives at work. That’s insane!! With that being said, we basically have two choices: We can go to the office, complete our tasks, go home and be done with it. Or we can get involved, use our time in the office to better ourselves and the company, and go above & beyond not because we have to but because we WANT to. Which option do you think you’d get more out of? Isn’t it about time to spend those 100,000 hours of your life wisely doing something you enjoy? Here’s how to achieve success at work and live a happier and fulfilling life.

Let’s get back to our definition of success. It revolves around one simple word. If you start doing this one thing, it can change your life forever. The key to a successful career (and life) lies in PASSION. What is passion? It’s thinking about a particular thing constantly. It’s telling your friends about it (maybe a little too much) with excitement. It’s eagerness to learn more about it, to fill your brain with knowledge of the topic, wanting to become an expert in that line of study. It’s the desire to be better, to reach higher goals, and to make an impact on those around you. It’s the thing that gives your life purpose. It makes you want to jump out of bed every morning excited to start the day. You feel lucky to be able to do this type of work all the time. It’s always on your mind. It’s not even about the money anymore. You would do it for free because that’s how passionate you are about it.

Finding your passion can take time. Not everyone knows what theirs is right off the bat. Think about what you do on your days off. What do you look forward to when you get home? Are there any aspects of your current job that you enjoy more than others? Finding your passion takes some serious soul searching but there’s no doubt in our minds that you’ll get to exactly where you’re supposed to be in life. It does take courage. You have to set goals, make a plan, and act on it. If you do nothing and continue going back and forth to your job that makes you miserable, you’ll remain there forever. You must step up and make the decision to do the thing your most passionate about for the rest of your life!
